A laser is an intensive light beam, a source of high energy. Laser hair removal works to reduce unwanted hair by focusing that intense light on the hair follicles, without damaging the skin in the treatment area. The pigment in the hair absorbs the laser energy, converts it into heat which then damages the hair follicle, preventing regrowth.
Generally, because the laser is attracted to pigment it works well on dark hair, especially if there is a contrast between your dark hair and your skin colour. If your unwanted hair is dark it can be good to have your laser hair removal work done when your skin is the lightest, such as during winter months.
That said, the world-class Alexandrite laser used by the trained therapists at Clear Skincare Clinics is adept at seeking out both light and dark pigment within the hair follicle in all skin types. That means great results for those with fair skin and hair too!
While it can be a little tricky to achieve during the summer months, it is a good idea to try and avoid tanning or any sun exposure for a couple of weeks prior and post-treatment. And while being sunburnt should always be avoided, it is definitely not recommended during laser hair removal treatments.
Everybody has a different pain threshold. Individual’s pain tolerance in relation to skin sensitivity can vary due to factors such as where they are in their menstrual cycle, what medications they may be taking or even their state of health. (Lack of sleep can also heighten your sensitivity and lower your pain thresholds.) Most people would say that waxing hurts, and laser hair removal treatments are generally not considered anywhere near as painful as waxing. So if you’re used to waxing and are thinking of trying laser hair removal, you can rest assured it will feel virtually pain-free in comparison.
Some clients describe the treated areas as feeling ‘warm and tingly’ at the most. It may feel a little uncomfortable on the areas of the body which are more sensitive than others such as the bikini line or the top lip, but it is generally described as either painless or slightly uncomfortable. The discomfort felt afterwards in the treatment area is akin to a slight sunburn.
At Clear Skincare laser clinics we don’t want any hair-raising experiences for our clients, so we choose to use the Alexandrite laser, the world’s leading laser hair removal technology for safe and effective results.
Alexandrite laser technology is recognised as the most efficient laser using higher brightness and more energy per light pulse than other lasers, making it an effective laser hair removal treatment for clients with less pigment in their fair hair and skin. But the Alexandrite laser technology also provides optimum safety, so we know our clients are in safe hands with this technology.
The other most important safety aspect with laser hair removal is that it is used correctly by trained and qualified therapists. At Clear Skincare laser clinics our staff are highly trained, certified and experienced at using Alexandrite laser hair removal machinery.
No procedure is entirely without risk, but the potential side effects of correctly used laser hair removal treatments are minimal. They include minor redness and skin irritation or infection. Your certified therapist can do a small patch test before using the laser on a large treatment area to ensure your skin will tolerate the laser.
Several factors can impact the results of laser hair removal which in turn determines how many sessions might be needed.
Your hair and skin type and colour, your gender, age, hormone levels and the specific areas being treated can all cause variations in the length of time it takes for the laser to destroy the hair follicle.
At Clear Skincare Clinics we suggest that laser hair removal can permanently reduce hair by 80% after eight to twelve treatments, but of course, this can vary. For the laser to work effectively you should not wax between sessions, as the laser needs to locate the hair follicle to work. You can safely shave the area, however.
The actual number of sessions needed will be determined as you go by the factors mentioned above, but laser hair removal remains the most affordable and effective solution for a permanent reduction in unwanted hair.
At Clear Skincare Clinics we use medical grade laser technology to permanently reduce hair growth in nearly all skin types by 80% after just eight to twelve sessions.
Our permanent hair removal service is safe and virtually pain-free, and offers the following long-term benefits:
- The confidence and comfort of smooth, hair-free skin 365 days per year.
- The elimination of time and money spent on messy home waxing kits or depilatory creams.
- No more frequent shaving, ingrown hairs or shaving rashes.
- Salon hair removal appointments become a thing of the past.
- Significant long-term time and cost savings are made.
Laser hair removal is the perfect solution to unwanted hair and is ideal for everyone including:
- Busy people who don’t have time for repetitive salon waxing appointments or frequent at-home hair removal methods.
- Anyone who likes silky smooth, hair-free skin every day.
- People with sensitive skin which reacts to waxes, shaving, plucking or hair removal creams.
- People who are prone to ingrown hairs.
- Anyone whose lifestyle makes it difficult to cover up during the hair growth phase required for waxing and depilatory creams.
- People with darker skin types and body hair where early regrowth is very obvious.
At Clear Skincare Clinics we offer an initial free consultation with an expert laser therapist. At this appointment we will discuss and provide you with information about preparing for your first laser treatment session.
However, it is worth taking note of the following:
- The laser targets the hair follicle, so no waxing, plucking or epilating in the period four to six weeks before or between your laser treatments. We suggest you shave the hair the day before your laser treatment.
- You should avoid all forms of tanning from two weeks prior to your laser treatments. The laser seeks out the pigment in the hair follicle, so the biggest contrast between skin tone and hair colour is ideal.
- Don’t use lotions, creams, moisturisers or powders on the skin in the treatment area on the day of your laser hair removal session.
- From one week before your laser treatments you should avoid using skin products in the treatment area which contain Vitamin A / retinol or hydroquinone.
Most people require between eight and twelve treatments scheduled four to six weeks apart to coincide with the hair growth cycle.
As the advanced Alexandrite laser technology can permanently reduce hair growth by up to 80%, the need for recurring laser hair removal treatments is minimal.
Allow four to six weeks between each laser hair removal appointment to allow for the hair to grow back. Laser requires hair follicles to target the pigment and progressively destroy them, preventing regrowth.
Some lasers aren’t as effective on fair skin and hair. At Clear Skincare Clinics we use the world’s leading medical grade laser technology which is clinically proven to effectively destroy the hair follicles in nearly all skin types, including fair, dark and olive.
Your skin type along with your age, gender, hormones and the specific treatment area can all impact on the effectiveness of each laser treatment session.
